Background of the study
Phonological variation in digital content is increasingly shaping contemporary language use in Nigeria. TikTok and Instagram, both prominent social media platforms, offer unique environments for auditory expression. On TikTok, users often engage in lip sync challenges and creative voiceovers, resulting in pronounced modifications of pronunciation, intonation, and stress patterns. Meanwhile, Instagram audio—featured in stories, reels, and audio captions—reflects a blend of informal speech and stylistic expression (Akinyemi, 2023). These digital audio contents highlight shifts in traditional phonological patterns, influenced by factors such as cultural identity, peer imitation, and platform-specific constraints (Ibrahim, 2024). The study compares the phonological features emerging from TikTok and Instagram to understand how digital performance influences sound production among Nigerian users. By analyzing a corpus of audio samples and user interactions, the research seeks to uncover the underlying mechanisms driving phonetic innovation in the digital realm, thereby contributing to broader theories of digital phonetics and language evolution (Obi, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite the growing importance of digital audio content, there is limited research on phonological variation in Nigerian social media, particularly in comparing TikTok and Instagram. Existing studies often concentrate on visual trends or textual content, neglecting the auditory dimension of online communication. This gap restricts our understanding of how digital platforms influence pronunciation and phonetic features. Educators and language researchers lack comprehensive data on the impact of digital performance on phonological patterns, hindering the development of effective models for digital phonetics (Chinwe, 2023). This study aims to address these shortcomings by providing a comparative analysis of phonological variation in TikTok and Instagram audio content.
